It may not look quite so impressive on Google Maps with the current resolution available, but when you check out this image (Author: Tormod Sandtorv, published on Wikipedia) you will be impressed. The hole is referred to by locals as the door to hell. In 1971 Soviet scientist discovered the place, thinking that there were oil fields and what they encountered was gas. Initially pleased it did not take long before the ground collapsed and all that was left was a crater of some 70 metres in diameter and a depth of some 20 metres. Finally it was decided to ignite the gas in the hope that it would burn off in a matter of days. Well, as of 2012 it is still burning.
